Each year Granite Bay Care sends a team of athletes and staff to the Maine Special Olympics. The Olympics takes place the first weekend of June and are held at the University of Maine, in Orono. Our GBC athletes get such a kick out of spending the weekend in the dorm rooms!
This past August we took over 90 staff and athletes and we took up a whole floor of the dorm! Many clients practice all year for the games. Each athlete picks three field events in which to participate. Time trials are held in May locally and the athletes are put into heats according to their time trials. The softball throw and long jump are popular events, as well as the 50 yard, 100 yard, and 200 yard dashes. A select few of our GBC athletes run the mile race!
This past year our athletes received dozens of gold, silver, and bronze metals. I don’t know who gets more excited about the medals… the athletes or the staff! We are always so excited to see our athletes compete and do so well. The level of effort by the athletes is so impressive and inspiring. Each and every athlete takes the games very seriously.
The Maine Special Olympics is so much more than just field events. There is a fabulous HUGE dance each year. The theme this year was disco and everyone dressed the part! The dance also featured the band Motor Booty… a Maine favorite. There is also a parade, a picnic dinner, and many other social events.
Special Olympics is my favorite thing we do at GBC. It is absolutely amazing to see our clients and staff come together as a strong and loyal community. Everyone cheers for each other and encourages each other. There is so much laughing and fun had by all involved. It is a bonding weekend. Every year I go and I’m thankful to be part of the Granite Bay Care family and to be lucky enough to be part of our client’s lives. Can’t wait for GBC Special Olympics 2016!!
